About

My name is Joe Whitley and I’m a sports journalist and photographer who lives on the outskirts of Leeds in West Yorkshire, UK.

I currently work full time for League Publications Ltd in a role that sees me contribute both copy and photographs to League Express newspaper, Rugby League World magazine, and TotalRL.com. In my previous position I worked at National Club Golfer and Lady Golfer magazines and the associated website NationalClubGolfer.com.

I have been taking photography seriously for five years now but have always had an eye for it. It has slowly become an obsession of mine and it’s without doubt my favourite thing to do in my spare time, other than spend time with my young son, Henry. I specialise in capturing striking golf course images and producing exciting and unusual portraits of people and animals. I would say my goal is to become a wildlife photographer travelling the world with National Geographic or the BBC. I am determined and a perfectionist – I never publish a photograph that isn’t tack sharp at full size and can spend up to two hours working on a single shot.

I like to think my style is unique, though I do draw inspiration from many big names, including Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell, Mariano Vivanco, Arthur Morris, David Muench, and Scott Kelby.

Indeed, I believe post production is certainly one of my strongest assets. I am highly skilled on Photoshop and Lightroom and am able to edit photos in a way that improves wow factor yet retains realism. I sometimes use Color Efex Pro filters if I am feeling adventurous.

I am a dedicated and creative photographer who likes to break the mould. I like to think my style is unique, but I do draw inspiration from many big names, including Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell, Mariano Vivanco, Arthur Morris, David Muench, and Scott Kelby.

I am equally comfortable in the studio using flash and lights as I am outside using nature to illuminate my subject.

This website is designed to showcase some of my work and explain how I achieved the results. Click here to see my latest work. If you like what you see, why not get in touch?
